We are just weeks away from the most exciting event in all of foosball, the $135,000 World Championships, being held this Labor Day weekend at the Hyatt Regency Hotel at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. At last year's big event Frederic Collignon and Todd Loffredo continued their five year mastery of the Open Doubles event with yet another championship victory, with Collignon going on to win the Open Singles and Mixed Doubles (with Cindy Head) titles as well. In the women's events, Vancouver's Moya Tielens took home both the singles and doubles titles (with Laurette Gunther), and proved that at least for the year 2002 she was the best lady player on the planet.

The doubles competition at this year's event should be especially exciting with several of the world's top teams eager to end the reign of the five-time defending champs. National champions Dave Gummeson and Tracy McMillin who played nearly-flawless foosball in winning in Minneapolis, enter the Dallas event as confident as ever, while 2000 and 2001 runners-up Trevor Park and Louis Cartwright would also have to be one of the top favorites to reach the final match. Last year's 3rd place finishers Adrian Zamora and Eddy Gartman will also once again be a team to be reckoned with. But the most intriguing challenger to the throne would have to be the world's top-rated player Rob Mares, and his new partner, seven time world champion Terry Moore, who will enter the 2003 World Championships as the event's number one seeded team. It's going to be fun watching this year's competiton unfold...

On a video note, for those of you who ordered the 2003 Nationals DVD set, they have shipped and should be arriving at your doorsteps in the very near future. The Nationals videos include 20 different matches and feature appearances from some of the sport's young stars like Pappas, Spredeman and Philbrook, along with a return to form of one of the game's all-time greats, Tony Bacon, who combined with long-time partner Don Chalifoux to finish fifth in Minnesota. You can see the complete 2003 National video listings directly beneath this column.

In the Inside Foos Special Offers section below you will also see the brand new National Finals DVD which features the Open Singles, Open Doubles, and Masters Singles from the recent Minneapolis event, all for only $25. We are also offering our newsletter subscribers the opportunity to pre-order the 10-hour 2003 World Championship DVD set at the VHS price of $60, a $10 savings, but only if you order before August 26.

As always Christina and I are looking forward to the trip to Dallas for the upcoming Texas spectacular, which is by far the most exciting and well-played event on the tournament schedule.

Seeya in Dallas...

INSIDE THE PRO TOUR...

Clearing out the notebook...

This will be the eighth time in the last nine years that the Hyatt Regency DFW will play host to the world's largest foosball event...

The tournament moved from the Airport Hilton in 1995 after several years at that venue...

In 1998 the tournament was held at the Fort Worth Convention Center, an event which marked the beginning of Collignon and Loffredo's five year run...

Ten years ago, in a truly memorable performance, 18 year old Tommy Adkisson won both Open Singles and Open Doubles at the World Championships, and finished second in Mixed Doubles...

Tommy went on to win two more world titles: Open Doubles with Rob Mares in 1996 and Open Singles in 1997...

The amazing Collignon has tripled (doubles, singles and mixed) at two of the last three world events...

Frederic now has 10 career world titles, second only among men to his partner Todd Loffredo's seventeen...

Loffredo would seem to be the favorite to win the singles title entering the 2003 event, having won two of the three open singles events so far this season...

Todd was one point away from winning all three, but for the amazing fifth game comeback performance by Rob Mares in Minneapolis...

TRIVIA QUESTION: Who won the Open Singles and Open Doubles titles at the 1991 World Championships?

Players to keep an eye on in Dallas: Tony Spredeman, Billy Pappas, and Mike Philbrook...

Spredeman was the runner-up in Open Singles at last year's worlds, after winning the Rookie Singles title the year before, while Pappas and Philbrook are coming off career-best performances in Minneapolis...

Hollywood's Gregg Perrie is in the midst of his best season in years, with a third place finish in singles in Las Vegas, and a second in doubles at the Nationals...

"Jeep" is one of the hardest-working, most competitive players in the history of the sport...

Perrie, an actor and agent, has also made appearances in several TV shows and movies, including Phantasm, The Dating Game, and Saved by the Bell...

Adrian Zamora continues to prove that he's among the very best all-around players in the sport...

Since the beginning of the 2002 season, "A.Z." has earned five top-3 finishes in just four major events...

Adrian won Open Singles at the 2002 Hall of Fame Classic, Open Mixed Doubles (with Christina Fuchs) at the 2003 Nationals,  finished second in Mixed Doubles and third in Open Doubles at the 2002 Worlds, and second to Todd Loffredo at this year's Masters...

Amazingly, Cindy Head has won the Women's Singles title at the worlds in thirteen of the last seventeen seasons...

TRIVIA ANSWER: John Smith, from Pasadena, Texas, doubled in 1991, winning both singles and doubles...

More than 700 players, 150 tables, bleachers seating 300 spectators, big screen TVs everywhere, live foosball action in your hotel room...

There really is nothing like the World Championships...
