"WINDY CITY" HOSTS 2005 USTSA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Chicago, Illinois will become the center of the foosball universe this June 30 through July 4 as the USTSA presents the 2005 National Championships. The beautiful Sheraton Hotel (Chicago Northwest) in Arlington Heights will be the host for this annual early-summer event that always features some of the season's best foosball action. At last year's Nationals, Tony Spredeman and Billy Pappas faced-off in a scintillating two-set final that saw Spredeman come out on top for his second career major title. Tony and Billy are expected to be two of the big favorites for this year's honors as well.

Just as in Las Vegas at the season-opening International Championships, this year's Nationals will feature the new "double-flght" format for Amateur and Semi Pro players. However, there have been some significant changes to the format that was originally introduced at the Vegas event:

-Each individual flight will now pay out to the top 6 players/teams. Instead of two flights playing for one payout as we saw in March, there will be individual payouts in each flight with a total prize fund of $5300 in the Semi Pro events and $4100 for the Amateur division winners.

-Only the winners of each flight will now play off for additional bonus money ($500 in Singles, $1000 in Doubles). The format at the nationals will offer a greater reward to the winners of the flights by allowing just the first place finishers in each of the singles and doubles flights the opportunity to play for the national title.

Other announced enhancements to the 2005 Chicago event include Friday qualifying events for every ratings division, with the top 2 finishers in each doubles and singles qualifier becoming eligible to compete against the sport's elite players in the big-money Championship events. Also, the opening day festivities (Thursday, June 30) will include the first-ever ITSF International Cup Open Singles competition, which is open to all players, with the top finishers moving closer towards qualifying for all-expense-paid trips to Italy for the ITSF World Series Playoff this fall.

The 2005 Nationals will also present the annual Masters Singles competition, which showcases the top Pro and Pro Master players in attendance in a single elimination battle to decide who will be taking home the prestigious Green Jacket. Last year in Minneapolis, Terry Moore defeated two-time winner Robert Mares to earn his second career Masters title and will look to join Todd Loffredo as the only three-time winners at the Chicago event.

You can still pre-register for the 2005 National Championships (the deadline has been moved to June 24th), or get information on reserving your room at the Sheraton Hotel by going to http://www.vifa.com. You can also check out the tournament flyer at http://www.vifa.com/pdf/Nationals%20Poster%202005.pdf.
BILLY THE KID EARNS SECOND STRAIGHT TEXAS TRIPLE
Twenty year old Billy Pappas continued his rise to the top of the foosball world with a truly remarkable three day performance at this year's $25,000 Texas State Championships. For the second consecutive year "Billy the Kid" won all three major open titles at the  annual Texas event, which was held this past May 27-29 in the city of Irving. and heads into the Chicago nationals as the hottest player on the professional tour.

The brilliant 20-year-old from Massachusetts once again won the Mixed Doubles title, with Joy Steward, coming from the loser's side to defeat Brittany Cersosimo and Joy's husband Matt in the final, and then paired with Tony Spredeman (who's also just 20) to claim the Open Doubles title for the second straight year. Billy and Tony also showcased their skills in the Open Singles final, putting on one of the most entertaining head-to-head performances of recent years, with Pappas finally coming out on top after a thrilling five game thrill ride.

In the doubles event Pappas and Spredeman faced-off against Terry Moore and Tracy McMillin who had fought their way back to the final after a quarterfinal loss to eventual third place finishers Matt Steward and Eddy Gartman. Moore and McMillin avenged that loss in the loser's bracket final and then faced-off against the two talented 20-year-olds with the 2005 Texas State title on the line.

Entering the doubles final with momentum after five straight loser's side wins, Moore and McMillin won a closely-contested game one by a score of 5-4, and it appeared that the final match could become a close and competitive championship decider. But Pappas and Spredeman quickly
took back control of the match in game two, outscoring Terry and Tracy  by a combined total of 15 to 5 in the next three games to win 5-2, 5-2, and 5-1 and earn a second straight Texas Open Doubles title. With both the Mixed and Open Doubles titles now in hand Billy then turned his attention to the singles event and the opportunity to play against his talented teammate Tony Spredeman.

The Open Singles final in Texas was quite simply one of the most well-played and entertaining matches of  the past few foosball seasons. Looking for his third open win of the weekend, Billy Pappas, who seems to be unstoppable from his 3-row, won the winner's bracket, while his doubles partner Spredeman decisively defeated third-place finisher Rob Mares to claim the loser's side of the bracket and reach a finals showdown withthe red hot Mr. Pappas.

In the final, Pappas pulled out a close first game 5-4, but Spredeman answered back, using his outstanding ball-handling skills to consistently
advance the ball rod-to-rod to his 3-row, where he then utilized his devastating "walk-the-dog" snake shot to find the back of the goal and win game two, 5-1. Billy, whose 3-row shooting percentage seems to always be in the 70 percent range these days, responded with a 5-4 third game victory to move ahead in the match two games to one.

With both players competing with tremendous energy and desire, the momentum swayed back to Tony's side of the table in game four as he again played a
nearly perfect game in winning 5-1. In game five Spredeman continued his high level of play, passing and scoring with great efficiency to surge ahead 4-1, and move within one point of a second and deciding set. But Pappas, who with his amazing array of offensive weapons is never out of a match, stormed back with four straight points, all within about two minutes time, to win the Texas State Open Singles title for the second straight year in a five game thriller and become one of the few players to ever triple in back-to-back years at a tournament of $25,000 or more.

TRIVIA TIME: Who was the last player to "triple" (winning Singles, Doubles and Mixed) at the National Championships?

TRIVIA ANSWER: Todd Loffredo, who won Open Singles, Open Doubles with Terry Moore, and Mixed with Shelly Langley in New Orleans back in 1993...

Frederic Collignon also accomplished a triple of sorts at the Atlanta Nationals in 2002, winning Singles, Doubles and Masters Singles...

Fred also finished second to Rob Mares and Debra Pflipsen in Mixed Doubles (playing with Ingrid Hauben) at the 2002 event in his only National Championship appearance...

Loffredo and Moore, who are playing together in Chicago, will look to duplicate that 1993 doubles victory at this year's Nationals...

Terry and Todd have won four major titles together: The Kickoff Classic, U.S. Open, and Nationals in 1993, and the inaugural Hall of Fame Classic in 1995...

Other top pairings for this year's Chicago foos-fest include Billy Pappas and Trevor Park,  who each
have a very good chance of winning their first-ever individual major title in that doubles event...

Pappas has become the king of the regional events in 2005, winning both Singles and Doubles at the $25,000 Superbowl of Foosball in Kentucky, and the $20,000 Utah State Championships, to go along with his spectacular performance in Texas...

Mark Torres and I also competed in Open Doubles at the recent Texas State, and actually won a few matches...

That Torres guy can
sure talk a good game...

So long from sunny SoCal, and we'll seeya in the windy city...
