Can I put a commercial grade rod into my Storm?  Would I need to change out the bearings too?

No bearing change is necessary to swap rods.

One suggestion I ALWAYS make if a player wants to improve the rods on a Tornado (or any hollow bar equipped table) is to install Tournament Soccer solid rods. They only cost about $10 apiece and never get bends in them. The real reason is it will dramatically improve your game and your conditoning level when you play on hollow bars. As far as I know I'm the only one to promote SOLID ROD HIGH PERFORMANCE TORNADO FOOSBALL. Try it once, especially on the Two Row since they bend the most. For $20 you get 2, less than the price of a single hollow two row.

Interesting.  How much does it change the feel of the rod?  Are they noticeably heavier?  We have a KT Sports table at work and I do like the feel of the solid rods even though the table itself is horrible to play on.

The feel of the solid rod is slightly heavier by a few ounces. They feel MUCH straighter. The feeling is similar to the difference between a 17 ounce cue and a 21 ounce cue, if you are familiar with billiards. The feeling you get after a while is similar to a batter swinging a bat with a weight ring on it in the on deck circle and then removing it to swing away in the batters' box when you practice on solids and then play on hollows.
