Title: A new old" foosballer"
Post by: stangbum on May 19, 2008, 10:37:31 PM
hello everyone...Rick here,
new to the site, but not to the game ;D
My quick story,
played foosball back in the late 70's, :o played in some tournments, mostly local. :) Bought this table around 78-79, refurbished it, played a few more years then had to do the family thing and put it into storage ..until now.  :)
Met some friends that had played the game in the 80's, one thing led to another and pulled it out of storage, boy I missed Foosball 8), did a search and found your website. WOW, the game has changed.
I even bought the book "The Complete History of Foosball" by Johnny Lott, way back. Its in storage to, I just have not found it yet :(
What do you think of the table ?

welcome back, that is the table I started on (well I think because it looks like a TS green top - if not it looks like a clone)...I hope to own one again some day...I have a 25 year old Brown Top at my sons house now

at home I of course have a Tornado-only 3 years old

enjoy the trip back

where are you playing at?

I live in Western N.C., Asheville to be exact.
I do not believe its a clone, but how can I tell for sure. I still have all the original equipment I took off of it when I refurbished it.
It says "Million Dollar" TS on the field if that helps, it also has the quarter slot on the side.

On a side note, I know its sounds like a dumb question, but to start back in tournaments you would be playing with the 3 goalie set up correct ?

Well now that depends tornado has 3 but Warrior the new table that is takeing over has 1check out some topics on warrior I also dusted off my brown top and got that old feeling to compeet.(a little to much) good luck

well, if it says Million Dollar Tour it should be an original TS since that was their slogan I just didn't know they used that phrase on the green top which is the oldest of the models...it went Green, Blue, Brown

Tournaments for the last 25 years have all been on Tornado (except a relatively recent few on Bonzini but that is a speciality table and for now very regional - long history in Europe good start in southeast in the US)

Tornado is the 3 man goalie - the person/orgnaization running all but a few tournaments is Mary Moore/IFP (Independent Foosball Promotions) - she has run over a quarter million dollars worth of tournaments that past 2 years and is THE promoter in foosball...she has used Tornado for over 20 years but has run into ongoing issues getting tables and support from them...she recently annouced that starting at end of July, and Kentucky State, she will be moving to a new table

the new table is called Warrior...the owner/developer is a long time fooser who has become a very sucessful business man with Warrior Golf equipment...online sales mainly - he sort of made a shot at this early 2000's which didn't work but he learned a bunch of things and has totally redesigned his table...there are no production tables in existence right now so there are many questions surrounding how well this is going to work

however, if he can pull off a production table as good as his prototype, which a bunch of well known players have played on, and he executes on all his marketing and foosball building goals, this will be a very big very good change for foosball (competitive and otherwise)

this table will have the one man goalie

Tornado just sent an open letter to the tournament foosball community yesterday (you can see on this site) and is obvioius planning on fighting back - see, it is already good for foosball

Tornado still runs the only two recognized "tour" tournaments including Tornado Worlds considered by most to be the most important/best tournament in the world (not including the first World Cup from last year - different story different time -check out the ITSF (International Table Soccer Federation) website http://www.table-soccer.org/  the rules you see hear are for now the rules used at all IFP and "tour" tournaments)

lots happening, very exciting time, good time to jump back in and bring a few people with you  :D

Looked at some video of the Warrior table, I like what I see, 8) I could prolly play on this one easier than the Tornado (because of 1 vs 3 back goalie). But in its defence, I have not seen a Tornado, (except on video) And that would be interesting to try. ;)
I will try to get some better pics of my table tonight and post them up
We are gunna have a little cook-out with a mini tournment ( just friends) ;D in 2 weeks at the house, should be fun. May take some pics of this if I have time ;)
Checked the balls that I have for the table, I think they will need to be replaced, any recommendations on what type of ball to buy for this particular table. :-\
thanks :)

it takes some getting used to (the 3 vs 1) but it ain't notin really...difference to be sure but overall it is a small part of the game but if you are used to one or the other, it jumps out at you like a big thing when it ain't no big thang

TS green top ball?

Charles, that is the original Quarter-Million dollar TS table, I blew up the image quite a bit and could make out the beginning of the word "Quarter".

Wildcard, thanks, that makes sense...it sure looks like the table I started on and was taught on by Jevat Meha my mentor...I did most of my serious practice on a blue top in my garage but started and toutered with Jevat on the green top which he eventually gave me...again, I hope to own one again some day but that is just for nosalga not actual serious play, I have definately moved on from TS

I know what you mean--my favorite TS was the Brownie. My next-door neighbor has a refurbished one that I am jonesin for, but he wants $300 for it, which I think is too much just for the stroll down nostalgia lane. However, I'm waiting until he gets desperate enough to have it out of his basement to take $100 for it, then I'll oblige him, lol.

The handles are smaller than the other ts tables. It looks exactly like the Vulcan table I Played on in the mid eighties...I want to say they were smaller though!! Nice table !!! Wish they never had those white balls though...lol

I took my old partner with me (my wife) to a foos hot spot. It was sweet! She doesn't even realize how much game she has but those who played against us did. What a devilish woman she can be, lol. 3/4 speed pick apart game, perfect for destroying overblown egos or high speed offenses and defenses. And she doesn't even think it is anything out of the ordinary after nearly 30 years since playing. Life can be sweet, the 70's rule,,,

Just a quick update,  :) going to a sports bar uptown soon with some friends. Will get to try a Tornada for the first time.
Any pointers or tips, cuse this friends I am going with have been playing on this table and they are saying I won't dominate like i did on my table, that they will teach me a lesson (just friendly talk  ;))
But I want to be ready. ;D

Tornado is slick so pinning the ball will be difficult.   Be patient, move slow and deliberate.  Just have fun, progress takes little bitty baby steps.
Title: Re: A new old" foosballer"
Post by: bbtuna on June 12, 2008, 02:25:14 PM
the ball is heavy compared to most tables and it comes off the back wall very fast if you aren't used to it

you can pin and have control but it is one of the hardest tables for this so it will take some getting used to but it has benefits too...ball rolls true, the table is level, it is easy to do tic tac stuff, a brush pass works better (but a consistant chip uphill is really hard which is why you don't see much or any of it), its accurate and consistent for inline shots, the wing men (extra 2 guys on the 2 rod) can be used to trap balls coming into the goal area and are useful in setting up push and pulls

have fun, if you dominate them on another table, you will dominate them on Tornado too after making adjustments to play style...let us know how it works out

Hey Stangbum,

If you're in Asheville, you might want to come out to Norton's Grille on Friday nights.  Two new F5 Tornado coin ops, (the tour table) and a draw your partner tournament every Friday night.  Usually 8 - 10 teams.  One of the best foosball scenes in the Carolinas.  Norton's is located at 1078 Tunnel Road.  Draw starts at 8:30.

Hope to see you there,

MJ

Thanks everyone for the tips, will take them with me :)
I am basically a simple push-pull man when it comes down to it, don't likt to play fast, like to keep it slow and dileberate.
Thanks for the invite MJones, I will talk to them and see if they would like to try it. I don't think any of us are ready for tournament play yet but sounds like fun just to come out and have some fun. 8)
I will keep you posted.  8)

Hey Stangbum,

We have all different levels playing in the draw.  C'mon out.   The more the merrier.  Believe me, if you love to play foosball, you're ready for a tournament.  You'll pick things up a lot faster.  Hope to see you tonight.

Nice cars, Stangbum.  We had 10 teams last night.  Pretty good turn out.  Beginners to experts in rank.  Ages 15 to 50+ (I turn 52 in August, a '70's hold out).  Take care,

MJ

Thanks MJones, How do you rank the players?  I talked with the friends I play with today and they were interested in the idea.  8)
But next weekend we plan on going up to Dublin, Ohio for a MCA National Car show, so not sure about next weekend. :( The following weekend is when I think we are going to Northside Grill and Bar with our friends (never been there). :)
Have not been to something like this in a long time. :o  My wife and myself retired from the bars "years" a go. But when my wife saw we were going her first question was....Is there a dance floor? :o   Lucky for me there isn't ;D  But we will try it out, thanks again for the invite :)

Hey Stangbum,

Sorry I'm slow getting back to you.  At Norton's, it's sort of a bar/restaurant Sport's bar kind of place.   The foosball tables are in an area all by themselves with seating for eating nearby.  It's not terribly smoky, and it's clean with good food.

The competition is very good, but the skill level is beginners to experts.   No pros or promasters in the weekly draws, but we do get a few in the bigger tournaments.

The cool thing is, you've got 15 year olds, like my son, to players like me, a 70's hold out that turns 52 in August.  It's a dedicated bunch of foosers.  It's a well run draw your partner format, and as long as you have any basic skills at all, you're going to have a ball.  You may draw the best player there and win, or you may draw me and go two and out!

The more players we get, the more fun it is.  $10 entry, dinner for under $10, a few quarters, and it's more fun than "Cats"!

C'mon out.  My son and I are coming this Friday.  We usually make it each week.  Check out the website: http://www.netfoos.com/account/63/account_home.html .  It's got all the info on players, Norton's, etc.

See ya foosin',

MJ

Finally got to play on the tornado table, 8) so here is my thoughts:
The table plays very fast, ball bounces around like a superball :o (remember those ?) ok back on track.
With me growing up on 1 man goalie, it took a while getting use to the 3 man goalie. ( put a few shots in my own goal with those extra goalie men.) ::)  Finally became aware of them and did not use them much, just kept them out of the way. Basicaslly just used them to get ball out of the corners. :-\(Hopefully will learn to utilizes them eventually)
The ball, was hard to get used to it being a dark color, was always using white, just could see it better out of the corner of my eye. Very bouncie, so started shooting a lot bank shot(worked quit well.) ;D
The men, seemed like the foot was a little larger, (could be just my imagination) they hit solid, especially with the bouncie ball.  :)
The table, very solid, seem like it was heavier than mine. The goalie hole, again seemed wider than my old TS table, but could be my imagination again. :-\ Seemed like the ball rocketed of the table a good bit. (some hard hitting and blocking) :)
Overall, I had a great time with this table once I figured it out, won the last 4or 5 games I played and held my own most of the night, (won more games than I lost.) 8)
Did not dominate on this table but towards the latter part of the night felt comfotable and began consistantly beating my friends that we where with (they had told me that I would not play like I did on my table) and they would kick butt. :D
So....I will practice some more on it and see what happens. 8)

Good Grief, that brings back my college days.. in Ames Iowa!

I remember those absolutely freezing nights in winter, and still the need to go to the student Memorial Union for some chess and then hard push-shooting on DeutschMeisters with the foreign students.  Then even more seriously on Fri & Sat nites at the Copper Dollar downtown, which started with four Quarter Million tables and was a favorite place for challenge games (50cents). I can still taste all that Miller High-Life & Pabst Blue Ribbon we drank and hear the loud loud loud hard rock, because were were right by the jukebox!  That was 78, then we heard of tournaments with the TS bluetops, which the Copper Dollar replaced the greentops with, before we finally saw our first milliondollar TS's in late 81.

I'll never forget those Million Dollar TS Coke-bottle handles and those washers that bar owners always put on wrong and started wandering all over the rods with that click-shick-shick!  But the one thing with Quarter Million TS greentops was, as they got older, the wooden(?) backstop often got chewed up and would return hard pulls, backpins and pullkicks back onto the table!  We always loved that side!
