I'm not sure if I'll have wheels by then, but I may consider cruising down for it. I've got friends in the StL anyway. I went MIA for a week or two because i haven't picked up a table yet. That's back in the works so I can get some mad practice in. Well... I'll have to wait a while to make my decision, but thanks for the heads up. The fact that it goes to a great cause, my father died of a heart attack as well, greatly increases my chances of attending.

I hope you can make it.  What state do you live in?  When you know for sure, let me know.  You will get 5 free raffle tickets coming from out of town!  It is a great cause, and for you and I it hits close to home.

I live in Macomb, Illinois. It's really only about 3 hours from StL. I'm not a very good foosball player (yet) but I'm still trying to get a table to play on on a regular basis. I haven't had a consistent table to practice on in over a year.

I'll try to make it. I won't have a partner, but hopefully there will be somebody there willing to play with a novice such as myself.

The table and practice really have little to no baring on my participation, the biggest concern is transportation. I need some wheels. (actually I already am going to buy an '02 focus for a really good price, just waiting for the guy to get his amount owed down to the sale price of the vehicle so he can get the title from the bank).

If anybody is going, and doesn't have a partner, and wouldn't mind playing with a novice like myself... I'd love to have a partner. I'm planning on going regardless, even if I can't find a partner it will be a good chance for me to experience some real foosball for the first time in quite a while. I'm not even quite sure how I'm getting down there yet, but I plan on being there.

I'm looking for a strong upper Rookie, AM, or Semi goalie, I don't feel like being in the nets for this unless its for a very strong AM, Semi, or Pro player.

The line forms out the door and around the corner...

Haha... if only that were a real link, and trust me I checked. I found a used jeep for like $2600 that I might buy when I get paid on Friday. We'll see, maybe I'll try to talk them down a couple hundred bucks. If I can get a vehicle I will definitely be down there for this event. If I can't come up with transportation then I might not make it. To get to St. Louis by train I would have to take the train to Chicago, and then back down to St. Louis, which would be a waste of money and time.

Anybody from the QC area heading down to this tournament?

Yeah, there may be some people coming from the Quad Cities, however I live about an hour south of the quad cities, and haven't even been up there to a Thursday night DYP yet. The only person from QC Foosball that I've even briefly spoken with is Tom Rios, and that was only in regards to what nights they foos in QC, and a few opinions of things.

If I end up not buying a car then I'll ask around to see if anybody from the QC is going to be making the trip down to St. Louis for this event... until then, happy foosing.

I will most likely fail, I'm self-instructed, and haven't played anybody with even an amateur level of play....

I'm pretty happy with my play, I think the one thing I really need to do is... like everyone is saying... get out and play. Get beat up on a little bit, pick up a few things here and there and piece my game together.

Nate, you CANNOT fail ... unless you don't go.   Playing with others who share the same passion, where you can meet them face to face, finding out how you interact with different people, together in the DYPs or brings and against them in matches...  That is your first win.

You should be in for a few surprises, some pleasant, as when you meet someone you can play with very comfortably.    Some will be unsettling, as when you play against your first opponent who's naturally 2-3 times faster than you, without even breaking a sweat.   Hopefully it'll be a great mix, the pleasant surprises to confirm you're human enough to get along with others, and the unsettling ones that show you your own possibilities and potentials.   Break a ball!

That definitely won't stop me from coming. I have the weekend off work, I don't care if I have a partner I'm taking a few days off to visit friends. I think now it boils down to me making this place an offer on a car and them accepting it. I'm about 80% sure, I will let you know by tuesday.

Hey Neil, I spoke with the auto dealership today, I think they're going to meet my budget and drop the price of the vehicle slightly for me. I also called my friends who live right near the landing and now have a place to stay. All things considered I would now rate my chances of showing up at around 95%.

Hell, I might even stay in STL and play in the DYP Sunday night at Stratford.  The reason I leave a 5% margin for error is just in case some absolute disaster happens in the next day or two (like half of my staff quits or something).

Bought a vehicle this morning. I will definitely be there Saturday afternoon. Looking forward to it!!

Yeah,  the players sure don't wish to be kicked above that $200 K/yr bracket.  Or Obambam's gonna gitcha!  (He originally started at $250 K, then adjusted it variably this week).

How much were the winnings in terms of CDS's and VRM's anyway?  (That's Credit Default Swap unregulated securities and Variable Rate Mortgage points for those who only have the Disney Channel with Nick @ Nite cable /DSS plans with no local channels  ;D)

Then all the players could declare they were a bunch of small businesses, then qualify as part of the $ 175 Billion dollar bailout plan!!  8)

Although the American Heart Association was the big winner, Erin was a close second winning that brown marble in the raffle. Neil had it up and running great with new parts. If I had won it, I would have sold my blonde off in a heartbeat and kept the brown, since I play on those at my local bar and I've always liked the tables' solid feel and ball control.

It would suck if she had to pay income tax on it though, Uncle Sam don't deserve none of that swag, that's fo' sho'

Just got back this morning from my little shotgun vacation. Wanted to say thanks again Neil and others for convincing me to go to the tournament. Although I was probably one of the less skilled players in the field it was a great experience, and I had an understanding partner who tried to help me out. I did score a couple nice goals though ;). I guess we won one match, so I shouldn't be that upset about it. You have a great hub for foosball down there, and hopefully I'll try to make it to a few tournaments from time to time, but until then.... time to practice. (to bad I can't find somebody to shoot a blazing pull or snake which I saw down there).

Nate,

So you WERE that Nate Z that played with Dave!  Great to hear!  Now you just need to become a serial fooser in your neighborhood and check out where the nearest college or community college town venues are, and hopefully they'll have a Tornado.  Spend a couple of weeks playing curiously by yourself, so the innocent bystanders become inured to your presence.  Then you pounce!

If you don't have any convenient nearby playing groups, you have to make your own.  And if you get to like the food and beverages and atmosphere at any nearby venue (whether you drink or not), it wouldn't hurt to suggest to an owner with pool tables and/or dart setups to get a foostable!   Datz how dah serial foozahs infiltrate day hood.

I've thought about talking to a bar or two about getting a foosball table. Unfortunately the nearest place I can find on the net is up in the Quad Cities, and it also takes place on the same night that I go to bowling league. The guy I played with was named Dean. He was amazing considering he said he'd been out of the game for about a decade.

I haven't quite ventured onto he university campus to look for foosers yet, primarily because I'm busy with work and other things. As far as the bars here, I've yet to talk to any of them.

Nate,

You are quite welcome!!  I am so glad you came down to play.  You had a good partner with Dean.  He is a very skilled player.  I watched you play a little and you have game for sure!  It will not take you long, and you will be a force to reckon with.

Hope you can make it down for MO State Nov 14-16 in St. Louis.  It will be a blast!

Thanks Neil. I am definitely going to make it down to the tournament. Not sure if I'm going to get a hotel room, or if I'm going to stay at my friends again. From a monetary standpoint I should probably crash with my friends and commute for the tournament. I may not even play in all the events, but I'd like to buy a package, but if I don't have partners for anything (which I probably won't) I might just register for events that I want to play in.  Glad to see that your event went so well, and that you got second place! To make a long story short, you'll definitely see me down there again. I might try to shoot up to the Quad Cities next week or the week after to play some of those guys before MO State.
Title: Re: 2nd Annual Foosin For your heart Charity tourney-St. Louis, MO
Post by: wildcard on October 29, 2008, 11:57:23 PM
Nate, you can save yourself 15 bucks by pre-registering with Mary and sending her a money order at the address provided on the flyer for $35 postmarked by Nov 1st I believe (so don't delay, send it in NOW!). I'm sure if you come that you will play in at least 2 events (that would be $30 for the individual event registrations alone) so you would start saving money with the 3rd event you play in onward, with the 4th events and after just gravy...

I wish I had known that was you playing with Dean S, I would have intro'd myself and chatted with you some after our match. Unfortunately, we were the team that put you guys out of the losers bracket so sorry for that. My forward partner was playing pretty good that match, his pull was dead on so don't feel bad about him scoring on you. You'll get better with practice, I promise!

Hope to see you again at MO State, we will definitely play some pickup games for funzies.

Rick

Oh ok, that was you. Yeah your partner was fast.... and like you said, dead on. I was honestly just very content taking one game (sure the last point was slop), and then scoring a goal myself. For me even seeing a pull shot like that was a good experience, it was fast and fiercely and precisely executed.

Will Mary take personal checks or does it have to be a money order?

It has to be a money order, and I would suggest a postal money order (those are the safest kind) so you can buy it and then send it off in one transaction. Don't forget to take Mary's address with you to the post office, and be sure to include your other pertinent contact information (including the tourney you are registering for ie: 2008 MO State) on a slip of paper since you are not in Mary's players' files yet.

Remember, it needs to be postmarked by Saturday!
