adding a player

Say, I have a question to ask. How do you add a player that comes in after you have already drawn up the tournament or have an odd number of players? What we have been doing is let him be with the first team that loses. Where do you fit them in? On the losers side or the winners side?  Who do they play? When there is more teams it is easier to do but when you only have let's say 3-4 teams it gets complicated. Most of the time that team only has to play one game and he is in the king seat(if he's placed on winners side) If you're on the losers side you lose once and your gone.    I am just wondering what is the fairest way to everyone. On one hand it's not fair to ones who played more matches on the other you don't want to lose once and be gone.

odd man out is what we call it

We have the same issues and would like to hear some feedback.  We have the first losing team in the dyp flip a coin and the winner gets to play with the "odd man out."  The odd man out team comes into the dyp with no losses.  The odd man out team is placed into the losers bracket but without a loss.  If beaten by a team in the losers bracket then the winning team must play the odd man out team again.  It gets confusing and would love to learn a better method.

Have the first losing team in the dyp flip a coin and the winner gets to play with the "odd man out."  Fit this late-entry team into the earliest available bye slot in the winners bracket (if there are two or more equal rankings, once more flip a coin to see which bye slot is replaced). Don't forget to get the lucky "2nd chance" players' second entry fee also--they should pay again for their extra chance at cashing.

If they are late put them in the losers side for singles and make them pay double entry! In doubles do the same.

If it's an "odd" number after the entries have closed... i'll sit out.
If you've already drawn up the bracket.. and someone shows up AFTER the advertised time...  then they are "early" for the NEXT tournament that night, or latenight challenge games or $1 games.

Some local promoters still do the Mr. X... (one of 2 players on 1st team eliminated get's the odd main out) and it typically holds up the event for all of the players that were there on time.   Most promoters are the nice guys.. and they nice guys finish last - or at least their tournaments do ... and they inconvenience the foosers who show up on time.

Boy.. i've bee at this too long... i'm a bit synical in my old foosball promoter age!   :)
