how do 5-Bar shots make you feel?
« on: July 13, 2007, 11:31:47 AM »
I don't know anyone who claims to have a badass 5-bar shot, and I don't know many people that like getting them shot against them.  Thought this would make for an amusing poll.

Hey Shawn....

I think five-bar shots get such a bad rap because no one expects them...
Most people are trying to pass to the three rod while the opposing goalie is sucking his thumb. They're not the most respectable shots, but I think they're totally called for if some dude makes you angry...

Hey Tapper,
I hear ya.  I just thought of this poll after the 5-bar crap I was making in Thursday night. I wonder if a consistent amount of shots could be made from the 5-bar on purpose.  Probably not if the opposing 5-bar is any good.  ;D

Have you ever played Don Swan.  The guy scores more off his 5-bar shots than his 3-bar.  That is against Pro-masters not just rooks.  He has so many 5-bar shot options it is sicking.  5-bar shots can be deadly and really bother your adversary.

Well I've only been playing tornado tourney style foosball since the middle of may so it is still one of my main shots in serious tourney play since I can't get the ball up to my three rod most of the time to Snake bite them.     In pick up games, I rarely shoot with the 5 man, except in singles.    I don't know how long it took you guys to get competent on the 5 man to where you had an impact on winning the games up front against good players, but I've had my own table for about a month now.  previously since may i was playing once a week at the local DYP.   I'm doing my best trying to learn to be comfortable trying to pass and catch

"how do 5-Bar shots make you feel?"  Pretty good when I'm the one shooting them in the goal  ;)
Nothing like a good old left or right hook off the wall in the goal to get a goalies attention.  As a goalie myself you have to be ready for anything, so I don't see a 5 bar shot as being cheap, also the forward defending needs to ready and defend agasint it.  Goalie shots though are DA BOMB!!!  8)

If you watch promaster matches, all the best have 5 bar shot options.

Anyone who saw Tommy Adkisson play Steve Mohs this weekend saw Tommy destroy Mohs with a wicked left-hook to not only to win game one 5 to 4, but also to see him win game 2 with another lefty 5 to 2.   Before the match Mohs said something to Tommy about his 5-bar being the best in the room LOL.

The five bar shots are the hardest to master, because the rod length swing is so short.  But the apex of the game is played between forwards who can either pass or shoot with the five rod.

I love fight back from 1-4 with 3 five-bar shots. I've done it 100's of times. Even when these guys know it's coming, they can't stop the power. Love the 5 bar

If you can score from the 5, more power to you.  Sometimes it's a higher % shot if your 3's getting bricked.

IMHO,

The day you shoot a well-practiced left hook while up 3-0 or 3-1 or 4-x,
With you or your team well ahead, so it is not in anger, nor in desperation.
Definitely with malice, however ... Then you have "foosed".

Because the defense is not showing itself ready to defend a 5bar.
In a local, they're assuming you have nothing better to do than take your chances
with them, extending the game, instead of enjoying the bar night out.
In a regional or tour stop, they're assuming you took the time and vacation out,
the hundreds of dollars in fees, fares, gas, and/or travel expenses,
Just so you could take your chances and probably not win due to their next slop.

You must punish, humiliate, exterminate and eviscerate these ones.
They will appreciate and love you for this lesson in communications.
Albeit much later...

To each his own on this one. Iv'e never played it. I get the same feeling as someone making a slop shot  in 8 ball.

You mean to say a tictac power 5bar shot on a sleeping goalkeeper who should know better, and a shot which is obviously practiced as a set shot gives you the feeling it's a slop shot?  You don't differentiate between a practiced set shot and a scrub's desperate attempt to score because he/she can't pass and can't shoot from his/her 3bar?

Except for some older locals who have this quaint "macho" sensibility about how forwards should only shoot from the 3, while jumping with glee when their goalkeeper mis-hits and banks a shot it, we encourage our beginners and rookies to try the set shots from the five, which helps develop better 5bar control skills and helps them when they go to tour and superregionals.

Discouraging 5bar shots but not goalkeeper or 3bar shots is discriminating against lefties or those who have better lefthanded control.  A hack will always be a hack, but good 5bar set shot is as hard if not harder to master as any other shot.

All I'm saying is that when I used to play alot ( back in the late 70's and early 80's), we didn't attempt 5 bar shots. 5 bars were used for passing only. With this basic understanding, someone sneaking in a 5 bar shot gave you the the same feeling as playing pool and someone who plays a slop shot. If now, people play the 5 bar on purpose with everyone on the same page, then by all means, go for it. I didn't intend to downplay a shot that you are obviously very passionate about. Relax.
