5-bar shooting
« on: October 09, 2009, 04:28:16 AM »
hi,

There is a tournament in my town in about 2 week's time. Our usual pub rules do not allow scoring from mid, but it will be allowed for this tournament.  Due to no-one being used to having to defend shots from mid, I want to learn how to do a few basic shots from there to catch my opponents by surprise.  Anyone have any tips?

I do realize that 2 weeks before a tournament is not the best time to be learning new shots/changing my playing style, but my standard 3-bar sequence is solid enough imo and I'd rather spend time getting a secondary line of shots from 0% potent to 60% than getting my standard line from 95.1% to 95.3%.

That and - any tips on defending someone (me playing front) who is attempting shots from the 5-bar?

I'm practicing an open handed angling shot from 55/54 which looks like it could be deadly if i execute it well - haven't tried it vs a live defense yet though...

Raithza,

Good question, especially since this element of play is new to you. The biggest, most universal thought I can offer is that whatever you decide to try, the important thing is to not give it away. Meaning, whether you are shooting or passing, they all need to look the same as you start the motion. 5 bar shots can be quite effective, but if you take a big backswing to add power each time, your opponent will catch on pretty quickly. Usually, a five bar shot is most effective as a surprise option, not as something you do as a major part of your offensive shot selection. As with any part of the game, different players will be better or worse at blocking 5 bar shots so paying attention to what is and is not working is critical. I think that establishing a good passing series, so your (typically) higher percentage 3 bar shot is the foundation of your game, should be your priority. You may want to practice with a friend and just for familiarity, only shoot 5 bar shots for a while. That way, they are already looking for the shot so if you develop a good one when they know it's coming, it will be that much more effective when done as a surprise.

Hope this helps............................................Tyler

Thanks.  I think I'm getting my shot to be ok... even though it's low accuracy, I'm mostly going for the shock factor here, to get the front player to attempt to block the shot rather than the pass.

Another thing - according to this... http://www.bonziniusa.com/documents/Playing%20Tips/ScorpionShot.txt the scorpion shot  is a good addition to a push kick sequence, which is what I use as my main... But I'm having trouble envisioning what exactly the scorpion means - if I understand correctly, I just hit the ball with 31 into the wall, then do a sort-of brush pass with 31? how is that different/better than just straight up angling the ball in? Also, any videos on youtube that you know of where someone does a scorpion?
