I think the answer above doesn't need any comment, but as I saw this thread's title I thought it could be an interesting topic. Ie is it a good idea to shoot directly when possible ?

Like at my first tourneys I wasn't much into shooting directly even though I had the opportunity to do so, I was a bit too nice with my opponent, letting him come to defend if I got the ball unexpectedly on my 3 bar for example... You know playing that guy who seems fair and all, you think and you are better than him, so doing the [insert right bad word here] by taking easy opporturnities seems unnecessary and not very friendly. But HOW MANY TIMES did I get f**d up being too nice like this ?!!?
You don't take that opportunity, and then he scores, and then he scores one or two sloppies and so on and then what ?? You plainly LOSE. wtf ?

So lastly I tried to come up with a "take everything you can" mentality, and don't hesitate anymore to shoot directly, especially if the opponent is too slow to be there ^^ In the end it's HIS problem not mine. And opportunities are there to be taken right ?
What can be hard to manage is once you scored one or two goals playing directly/fast, is the tendency to keep playing at a fast pace, which can be a suicide move depending who you're facing. And to work well a direct shoot must be a surprise :-)

Comparing it to field soccer, current foosball allows the equivalent of a direct free kick if the ball is in play.  This means the ball is live and can be shot on goal and scored from the wherever the ball is in play, the goal & 2bar area, the 5bar or the 3bar area.  This can be scored by any figure, whether a forward, a midfielder or even a defender or the goalkeeper.

However, from a deadball in foosball, as in serving the first point or subsequent points after a goal has been scored, or the ball has gone dead due to coming off the table, or the ball stops between the reach of either players' figures, then it is served with the equivalent of an indirect free kick in field soccer, where the ball has to touch two figures, before becoming a live ball.  In foosball this means two figures from in the area (the goal & 2bar area, the 5bar area or the 3bar area) it is being put back into play must touch the ball, then a full second must pass before shooting or passing the ball from that area.  Of course in field soccer, there is no 1 second requirement before the ball is considered live.

Interestingly enough we do not allow goals from the 5-bar at any venue where I foos regularly, but I think that's just the exception for where I stay.

Interestingly enough we do not allow goals from the 5-bar at any venue where I foos regularly, but I think that's just the exception for where I stay.

Over the decades, that's been quite true, too, in many places in North American venues, where a 5bar shot has been regarded as a "hack" shot.  Although as more players are exposed to organized tournament play, the principle and NATURE of competition will always bring out play, and players who will play to score in any way that the rules allow them to.

Precluding 5bar or left-handed shots is also quite discriminatory against lefties, as well as any player, right or left-handed, who has put in the time and practice to master a left-handed shot from the goal, 2bar, or 3bar.  Never mind the obvious skill and preparation showed, making it obvious to all that the shot was no "hack" or "slop" shot.  Just a throwback to the old chauvinist "macho" sensibilities of the past.

And there're few things as much fun as putting in a left-handed haymaker at 4-all or gamepoint, a "left hook" as many call it, in a pickup game against your best buddies, and then looking them in the eye.  .... ohh the pain ......
