Question for Goalies! need help

Okay here's a question for all you great shot blockers.

I'm fairly new at this...only been playing 3 months... The guy I play against doesn't shoot the same shot all the time. He will do semi-pull shots, throw shots, angle shots, tic-tac shots. Slow shots, fast shots..... I have never seen anybody shoot angle shots at the corner of a goal as accurate as he does. If I have my goalie as far over as he can go, and he angles a shot at me with his 3rod  from the side wall.....If my goalies feet aren't angled back towards the goal a bit....his shot will sneak by....dam near every time.....What kind of a defense do I try with all these multiple type shots coming at me???????  Any ideas??

Hey Dave....
I'm a visual learner.. so it works best for me if I can "see" goalie defenses in action.... seeing the "shuffling"... and "randomness" in defensive movement within the same game even...
Watching the top goalies adapt their defense based on what their oppents are doing... or on how effective their defensive plan is.

So to see it... come on out to Three Nines Tavern in Jessup this Saturday!!!  You'll get plenty of good foos action to watch.   Should you want to compete... bring your "buddy".. and see if any of the top locals can be effective in blocking him.. and you'll be able to steal a few mental cues from them perhaps.
http://maryland.foosball.com will give you more info on Saturday's event.

Happy Foosing... JimW

Jim

Thanks for the reply. We are actually going to try and make it down on Saturday. I'm only about 1/2 hour away from there.

Yeah, we've got a guy at work that will nail ya to the wall with them if you let him. He has that shot and a near and far wall bank with the outside men on the three bar. The solution I have for the angle is this, he can only go in front of or behind your goalie. A simple bait and switch gets a turnover 80% of the time. I set the goalie foot back enough that the behind shot is shot is taken away. I bring the two bar man on the far side up and put the foot back. There is still a hole but it is small. I bring the foot forward enough to open the hole until he shoots. I then rebound and catch the ball. A good goalie learns all the shots possible from any position and covers accordingly for the most probable from the opponent. As you play this guy more and more you'll learn the hard way what shots he can pull off and at what speed and smoothness he can execute them. I probably can't say enough about paying attention to your opponents tell tale signs that he is 1/10 of a second away from shooting. If he can beat you at will at any given time, I'd say stop trying so hard to win and practice the thing that probably got you in the position to play goalie in the first place. Your five bar!
Most of the time when I'm playing random people at work I consider it a score in my head if I can pass from two to five then five to three. I also see them scoring as an opportunity to practice my serve. Don't get frustrated 'cause he wins. He'll get his later. I often get hosed by folks who can not play at all for the simple reason I pick one thing per game, per rod and practice passing through the same lane over and over. It's predictable, which makes it much more of a challenge since they know where I'm going each time. It's just a whole lot better to have a live person on the other side :) Oh and I also follow the rules to a "T", just because they pass sloppy and illegal doesn't mean I'll pass sloppy and illegal just to win. I used to call them on it but quickly found I was wasting my time.

Razor ...

Yeah I need to work on my ball handling, and passing more for sure... The guy I play is also left handed so he beats just about everybody with the 5 rod. The ball is down on my end of the table 85% of the time... That in and of itself is a killer. It is great practice for me though. I went to the tourmamnet at 999's this weekend... NICE JOB BY THE WAY JIM W!!
I got to shoot one game with a pro ranked player (Damian if you by chance read this thanks for the game, and the tips). He gave me a few tips on serving since I kept pushing it right to him damn near everytime I served!!! (need to practice that as well a few 100 times...) I managed to block a couple of his shots, and foosed him once for a point... He had a great push kick shot...something you don't see to much) We hit Loonies, and Dead Freedies and played non stop till 1:30 saturday night... (BAR TABLES SUCK)

Mental note to anybody reading this. JIM W sells small bottles of silicone that are great size to stuff in your pocket, and take to bars to lube the rods... Snake shot doesn't work well with dry rods... vegitable oil works well from the cook if all else fails!!!

practice practice practice

Yeah, left handers can own ya on the 5 bar. I'll tell you to ask this of any pro who was born right handed. "How long did it take before you decided to train yourself to be ambidextrous?"
