Foos On First

Watch Friends' Matthew Perry sink a monkey shot. See ER's George Clooney engage a three-finger pull. No, it's not Battle of the Network Stars; it's Foosball. .The popular barroom staple-think soccer minus the dirt-has kicked its way into Hollywood. Besides being featured on Friends and ER, the armless men were center stage in the Oscar-nominated Il Postino and in Chris O'Donnell's Mad Love. They also show up in new ads for Coors Light and Miller beers.

Foosball has had a resurgence in arcades and homes as well. Manufacturer Tornado Table Sports of Fort Worth says sales of its tables leaped from 400 in 1985 to 5,000 in 1995. "It's crazy," says Tornado's Steve Murray. 'We just tapped into the home market and we can't keep up."

What's with the Foosheads? Friends' producers say they used the contraption because they thought it was funny. But Marty Stock of Foote, Cone & Belding, produeer of the Coors ads, believes it's all part of a move back to basics. "There's always a backlash against whatever is high-teeh," says Stock. "Foosball is a part of that. It's a wooden table with a ball and rods that spin. Done!"-Russ Spencer
