Find a local tournament, show up, be prepared to play goalie, and have fun.

Let your partner know that you're new and ask for advice
Pay attention to what other goalies are doing
Try to change what you're doing if it's not working

Play a moving defense, not a stationary race defense.  Look at what other goalies are doing and/or ask your partner for tips on doing this.

Don't get frustrated when the opponent scores on you--expect them to score half the time or more that they have the ball.  Try to control the ball, make sure that when you have it you get it past their 3-rod (and hopefully their 5-rod).  And if it's bouncing around, don't let it roll out of your area to the opposing 3-rod.

Also don't get frustrated and not come back--the first 4-5 times you come out are a learning experience, your game will improve dramatically.

Have fun!
