Review of updated table.
« on: May 19, 2009, 08:09:27 AM »
Yesterday I finally had the time to put all of the updated parts on my table. I meant to take pics but the digicam was dead. Props to Jimmy K and Jordan for the help. Here are my initial thoughts:

1. New handles- I like them. They look good. We weighed them and they are like 25% heavier than the wooden ones (65 vs. 85 grams). With the wraps I can not really tell any difference between old and new. Took about 15 minutes to adjust the snake but after that it was fine.
2. New sidestrips- I love them!! The look is OK. They tend to bubble a little and dirt and other crap will be much more visible over time. That being said, they play excellent. I am younger (26) as far as foosers go, but after 2 days of practice I can't get enough bankshots. I can definitely see how that shot was such a powerful option back in the day. With the old strips, nearly every bank went off the table or at least hopped up and hit one of the rods, but with these the only balls off the table were ones that were directly blocked. Also, I shoot a pretty good scorpion and it's easier to hit consistently because the ball stays down. Wall passes feel tighter, but no major differences there. Bounce passes seem better also, since the ball tends to stay down. Only downsides are the Garlando- style off the wall ariel is no longer an option :( and the ball sometimes tends to get stuck on the wall (ala Bonzini). There will definitely be more 3 walls called during 5 bar possessions. This does not happen all that often, but more than it used to. Guess I can't have it all...
3. New men- Nothing major here. We have t-3000's at the tournament I run, so I guess I am used to them.
4. New balls- 5 hour tumbled I believe. They look like some balls I got from Valley about a year ago that got slick as hell after 30 minutes, but these are much improved. They are harder than the old pink balls that had the white fuzz, but play similarly. I bet these will actually last longer too. I really like the feel on the stick series, not hard to catch at all. Brush feel is also good.

Few other thoughts:
- Taking off the old sidestrips was not hard. Just use a straight razor (carefully) to get under them. They just peel right up. Getting the residual glue off, on the other hand, was a pain in the ass. I was leery about using any solvent on the table (yeah I tend to baby it), so I pretty much did it by hand. I just basically rubbed my fingers on it until the friction heated the glue. Once it heated up a little it peeled off in chunks. We got 95% of it up by hand and then used rubbing alcohol and a rag to get the rest off.
- As for laying the new sidestrips, have someone hold it against the wall while the other takes the strip to the other end and just starts laying it down. It doesn't have to be perfect and is not hard to get it flush with the wall. Make sure the table is very clean underneath the strip as you can see whatever is under there!!
- Total install time for handles men and strips was only like an hour, so not too bad there.

banks are better but still not consistant like they should be because the front edge of the man is not straight

the new 5 hour tumble ball is harder and heavier than the previous pink ball...the initial "fuzz" lasts much longer...I believe, having both at home, that it is the exact same ball as the yellow Dynamo ball excpet for the die

it has a little more friction due to the tumble but it really doesn't improve catching because the ball is heavy and bounces off the man more so it ends up being pretty much a wash

the Warrior ball on the other hand is lighter, softer, and catching is instantly improved by a large obvious margin...the Warrior ball also keeps it shape and playability for a very very long time...best ball ever made so far

in the end, I prefer the previous pink ball if the choice was pink or red 5hr tumble...the red is better for a tournament since it keeps its "new" characteristics the entire tournament where the pink does not but I wonder what the pink would do if you 5 hr tumbled it

problem for me is that Tornado should not be satisfied with this ball or the man's foot design but unless new management has new wisdom I believe this is what we will have for the forseeable future

on the side strips and 3 walls...they have been careful to reword the off the wall to say the ball isn't considered off the wall unitl it comes off the strip so you should not have more 3 walls than normal

here is the rule wording

23.2.2 Once the ball has touched the wall or side strip, it will not be counted as hitting the wall again until it has rolled off the side strip or is sufficiently maneuvered away from the wall if there is no side strip present and the ball has come to rest against the wall.

I took a new 5hr red T ball, new pink T ball and a reconditioned yellow D ball to work weighted and measured them, on a very accurate scale they all weight 26 grams. Far as the hardness, the red and pink T ball are very similar in the way they bounce from a controlled height on to a granite table the D ball bounced apx. 20% less than the T balls consistently. All the balls tested were within .003'' (1.366'' - 1.369'') in diameter of each other. It would be interesting to know actual ball chemistry makeup between red and pink T ball besides color.

wow, i have been wanting that for quite some time, thank you very much...okay, so if the 5hrT is not heavier it must be harder but being the same diameter I would think harder meant more dense but I guess I can see depending on the chemistry, something could be harder but...weird

you say both T balls bounced the same or not??...because i would bet a pay check that the pink T and 5hrT are different...I said 5hrT was heavier but I would grant "harder" but that could not be if they both bounced the same in a controlled drop

i am a bit flumexed...the difference between the 2 T balls is more than color and rough exterior...you gave me part of the answer but not the entire answer...

hey, while we fool with this, I don't suppose you have a Warrior ball you could throw into the same mix?

The pink balls I'm testing came new with a new early model T3000 The red balls I'm testing the pink one against came with A up date kit.The pink ball bounces a bit higher than the red 5hr even after a agresive 40 grit reconditioning of the pink ball. There are a few variables to deal with on the bounciness before giving solid results but the weights are for sure. I wish I did have a warrior ball, I'll get a few sometime soon.
